Unless your vehicle has obvious issues, you expect it to drive smoothly. Obviously, anything can wrong with any car, at any time. That’s just the nature of vehicles. When something does go wrong it can be very frustrating because you rely on your vehicle for so many things. One of the most frustrating car problems is a sputtering vehicle. If your car has been sputtering lately, then you understand.
When you press the gas pedal, your vehicle just kind of ignores you. Sometimes it feels likes it’s going to just die right in the middle of the road. So, why does that happen when you give it gas, and can you do anything about it?
Common Causes
For starters, your sputtering could be a simple fuel problem. If your gas tank is low, your car will sputter. This is rare because most drivers usually know when they are low on fuel. But if you forget to look at your gas gauge then your car could end up sputtering.
Unfortunately, that’s the only simple answer. The other causes of sputtering are generally more serious. An issue in your exhaust or fuel system could cause sputtering and so could old or dirty parts.
Fuel System – the problem could lie somewhere in the fuel system, like a pump, injector, or filter. If your car doesn’t get the right amount of air and fuel your engine won’t create the proper combustion to power your vehicle. If you don’t address the problem, you might end up with total engine failure.
Spark Plugs – bad spark plugs can also cause engine sputtering. Fortunately, this is an easy fix. Replacing them should do the trick and correct the sputtering unless there is another issue.
Mass Airflow Sensor – if the mass airflow sensor gets dirty, your vehicle can sputter. This sensor tracks the temperature and weight of the air moving to the engine. When the mass airflow sensor wears out or gets dirty, your engine can’t get enough power, which also causes lower gas mileage.
Catalytic Converter – the catalytic converter lowers the amount of pollution from your vehicle. If this part is not functioning right, for whatever the reason, your engine will lose some power and your car will likely have some sputtering.
