Downey Auto Repair – Preparing Your Vehicle for Back to School
It’s time to go back to school again in Downey and kids are returning to the classroom for more in-person instruction. Getting your kids ready to go back to school is a process and it has a lot of different parts. For most families that includes having at least one reliable vehicle.
For parents with older kids, especially those headed off to college, that can also mean buying an additional vehicle. Regardless of what stage your kids are in, now is a definitely a good time to pay attention to proper vehicle maintenance.
Service and Maintenance Checklist
If it’s been a while since your vehicle had a good tune-up, there’s no better time than the present to get it done. Our ASE certified technicians are ready to serve you. However, if you don’t have time right now, there are some things you can do for your car, truck, crossover, or SUV in the meantime. Here some things to put on your to-do list.
Brakes and Tires – a good place to start is the tires. For starters, check the tread. If they are worn, then it’s time to replace them. Also, if your tires have an uneven wear-pattern then something is off, and you should get it checked out. If you happen to find a screw or nail in your tire, then wait till you get to a shop before you pull it out in case it goes flat. After you’re done with the tires, look at your brake pads to be sure they still have enough life. If your vehicle is screeching or vibrating when you brake, the pads and/or rotors could be worn out.
Lights and Wipers – be sure to check all your lights. If any bulbs are out, or not working right, get them replaced. While you’re at it, check your wiper blades, as well. You might not need them a lot, but you still them to be in working order when you do.
Check Under the Hood – lastly, any vehicle inspection must include a check under the hood. The key is knowing what to look for, which is why it’s a good idea to have one of our experienced technicians look for you. But there are some things you can check yourself.
- Check fluid levels, including coolant, transmission, and oil. And don’t forget power steering fluid and brake fluid. If you have any leaks or fluids are dirty or smell bad, then get it checked out. If one of your fluids is low, but you can’t see a leak, then fill it to the proper level.
- If you’re looking under the hood, then check the battery for signs of corrosion or leaking acid. And if you happened to own a voltmeter, you can check your battery life. If the charge is low, you might want to buy a new battery.
- Check your cables and hoses and tighten anything that’s loose or replace any parts that are worn out. If you need help, then schedule an appointment and we’ll take care of it for you.
