Most people don’t think of cold temperatures when talking about Southern California. After all, we are known for our sunshine and hot weather. However, if you live in the Downey area, you know that during winter, our temperatures can dip down pretty low overnight. And those lower temperatures can be a problem for your car battery, especially if you park outside.
Spring and summer are just around the corner, but during the next couple of months you should pay attention to your battery’s health a little closer. These next few months is when your battery can suffer the most. That’s because the temperature outside can have a major effect on how well your battery works.
How to Protect Your Battery From the Cold
So, what can you do to protect your battery from being hurt by the cold temperatures? There are several things that will help. Number one, if your battery is getting a little older then start by getting it checked it out at our Downey Service Center. If you need a new battery, we’ll take care of you.
If your battery is healthy, then it’s important to follow these steps to keep it that way.
1. The cold temperatures can drain your battery’s power. So, if you can park it in a garage, or even under a carport, that will go a long way in keeping your battery warm and charged. If you don’t have garage space available, a car cover will also help.
2. It’s also a good idea to drive your car every day, even if it’s for just a short amount of time. Running your vehicle for about 10 minutes a day will help your battery keep its charge in the colder temperatures.
3. And speaking of running your vehicle. It’s a good idea to let it run for a few minutes before you start plugging in and turning on accessories.
4. Last, but not least, take look at your battery itself. Make sure it’s clean and clear of dirt, grime or debris. Check the posts for any corrosion and if you see any, be sure to clean it up.
If you’re battery does seem like it’s a little low on power, and it’s having a harder time starting, you can also give it some juice. A jump start could be what your battery needs to get fully charged again.
