Auto Repair in Downey - What’s Wrong with My Exhaust?

Auto Repair in Downey - What’s Wrong with My Exhaust?

Although you might not give it a second thought, your vehicle’s exhaust system plays one of the most important factors in your car’s performance. The exhaust system consists of several parts, and they have to work together for your car to function properly. If anything goes wrong with one of these parts, the entire system can suffer, and your vehicle will not perform right.

Common Problems with the Exhaust System

An Exhaust Leak – one of the most common issues with exhaust systems is a leak. If you drive in rough conditions your exhaust system will suffer more wear and tear than in normal driving conditions. Over time, these harsh conditions cause weak areas in your system, which makes it susceptible to holes and cracks. When exhaust leaks, the gases and fumes can escape into your vehicle’s cabin, which is obviously not a good thing. Get your car exhaust system checked right away, if you notice any exhaust smells inside your vehicle.

Bad Oxygen Sensor – your entire exhaust system can go south when an oxygen sensor goes bad. If the sensor does go bad your check engine warning light will turn on. The good news is the rest of your exhaust system is likely fine. However, when an O2 sensor has an issue there could be another problem, including a clogged catalytic converter. Your exhaust system should perform correctly when you replace the O2 sensor unless you have another problem. If that happens then you need to have us diagnose it.

Rusty Parts – if the muffler or catalytic converter have rust, or any other part of your exhaust system, that’s a sign there is a problem. Repetitive condensation causes the rust, and over time it corrodes metal parts. Eventually this will lead to cracking. If the rust is bad enough, you will need to replace those parts.

Exhaust Smoke – there are several different colors of exhaust smoke. Black smoke usually indicates you are wasting gas because your car is burning more fuel than it needs. A clogged fuel injector or air filter is usually the cause. If you see blue smoke that usually means oil is burning in the combustion chamber because you have rings or seals that are loose. If you see white smoke, coolant could be burning in the combustion chamber due to a bad gasket or a broken head.
